A Walk in the Clouds in Assam and Meghalaya

Experience walking in the clouds and forever being off the beated path on a domestic trip india to a place that does not resemble anything in india at all! The people, languages, flora and fauna of the Northeast is distinct and very different from the rest of the Indian sub-continent!

ITINERARY/ SCHEDULE

Duration: 07 nights / 08 days Route: Guwahati – Kaziranga National Park – Shillong – Cherrapunjee – Mawlynnong – Dwaki – Shillong – Guwahati Day 01: Guwahati – Kaziranga (250 kms / 5 hrs) (Assam)

Arrive in Guwahati by air. On your arrival, meet our driver at the airport and drive towards Kaziranga National Park. On your arrival check into a resort. Overnight at Guwahati.

Day 02: Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve Early in the morning, we shall go for an elephant ride to try and see all of the ‘Big Five’ wild animals of India here. Kaziranga’s Big Five are the Rhino, the tiger, the wild buffalo, the elephant and the swamp deer. The Park is most popular for its Rhinoceros siting. Elephant ride is the best way to behold the vigour and charm of the enchanting wildlife of the park. Return to the resort for your breakfast. Mid-morning we will explore the fascinating Kaziranga Orchid centre. In the afternoon we go on a jeep safari in the western range of the park for some more sighting and stories on the wild side!

Day 03: Kaziranga – Shillong (290 km / 6 hrs) (Meghalay) After a sumptuous breakfast, we check out from the hotel and drive to the Capital of Meghalay, Shillong. On arrival, we check in to the hotel. Overnight at Shillong! We will have travelled a bit and are free to use the evening for a short walk around the hotel or take off on our own exploring the villages and markets around us. Day 04: Shillong – Day trip to Cherrapunjee (56 km / 2 ½ hrs) We enjoy breakfast at the hotel and drive to Cherrapunjee. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on the planet and the only place in India to receive rain throughout the year. The town of Cherrapunji is nestled in the East Khasi Hills about 50 km southwest of the state’s capital, Shillong. Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra or Churra, means ‘the land of oranges’. The cliffs of Cherrapunji also offer stunning views of the plains of Bangladesh. Visit Seven Sister Falls, Nahkhalikai Falls, Mwasmai Cave, Koh Ram Hoh, eco-park. Overnight at Shillong. Optional: Lunch at Polo Orchid Resort

Day 05: Shillong – Day trip to Mawlynnong (90 km / 3 hrs) After breakfast, we drive from Shillong to Myallynnong Village. Mawlynnong Village located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya also referred to as “God’s own garden” has won the acclaim of being the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. The village known for its cleanliness is located around 90 km from Shillong and is a community-based eco-tourism initiative. Not surprising is the fact that Mawlynnong has a Matrilineal society ..so the property and wealth are passed from the mother to the youngest daughter who keeps her surname! The community has made a collective effort to maintain the ambience of a clean village. The village offers picturesque natural beauty, a trek to the living root bridge at a neighbouring village Riwai. The village also offers a sight of natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock.

Later we take an excursion to Dawki, along the Bangladesh Border (Tamabil Border from Bangladesh side). The main attraction is the Umgot river with its crystal clear water. We enjoy a boat ride on crystal clear Umgot river. Evening return back to Shillong. Overnight at the hotel. Day 06: Shillong After breakfast, we shall drive to visit Mawphlang Sacred Forest. Mawphlang is a village in the East Khasi Hills district, 25 kilometres from Shillong. The word Maw means stone & MawPhlang means grassy stone, named after the monoliths found here. Mawphlang is the site of one of the Khasi Hills sacred groves. A sacred grove cannot be cut or cultivated as it is termed sacred from aeons and is, therefore, a rich bio-diverse habitat. A wonderful place for enthusiastic nature photographers.

Then we go on an afternoon excursion to Laitlum Grand Canyons. Laitlum Grand Canyons is one of those spots where you can have a birds-eye view of the city of Shillong. The green hills, the orchids, the bamboo plants, the cotton clouds - all from one point.

Day 07: Shillong – Day trip to Jowai (75 km / 2 ½ hrs) After breakfast drive early morning from Shillong to Jowai. Visit Krangsuri falls, Nartiang Village & Tyrshi Falls in Jowai. Evening drive back to Shillong. Overnight at Shillong.

Day 08: Shillong – Guwahati (120 km / 2 ½ hrs) This morning check out from hotel and transfer to Guwahati airport for your onward.
